After the New Saga had been launched, I believed many local (Malaysian) auto fans had shift their attention to the next model that will be launched by Proton early next year, the Proton MPV. Until the date of this writing, there is still no spyshots or details information available on the internet for this model. But if you googled hard enough, there are bits and pieces here and there but most are based from hearsays. There was a reliable source, a blog owned by the chief designer of the new mpv himself. However about few days ago, he decided to block his blog from anybody getting in. I do not know for what reason he did that, but it should be a very good one.
Anyway, I managed to catch some of his hints from his writing plus others that I gathered from few forums and blogs, and these are the summary of information related to the Proton MPV which I deem reliable. Its up to the readers here whether to believe it or not. If you have other believable information to add here, please do so.
The Project:
A little bird told me that the project had started a while ago, starting on par with the development of Persona. By now it should have reached quite advance stage of development process. There are news that says few clay models have been completed. The Chassis is ready now and structurul rigidity is still being fine tune to get better crash rating standard. The target product launch date is somewhere in the 1st quarter of 2009. So, we might see spyshots of this mpv on road test starting from Jun 2008 onwards.
The Capacity:
One of the most probable facts is that its going to be a 7 seater. And not just any 7 seater. It can seats 7 full size adults. Not like Citra or Livina which are actually 5 + 2 seater. The third row seats will not have raised floor level which are only suited for kids. The cabin space will be better and ample storage capacity even with the last seat up.
The Engine:
There are few engine option under testing and consideration. One of it is the standard campro 1.6 cps engine, secondly, the supercharge campro 1.6 cps with added vvt mechanism and lastly the Mitsubishi 2.0 V6 engine currently used in the Perdana. For the first option, I think the CPS version might be able to pull the load with 2 or 3 passengers but for fully loaded and climbing hill? I don’t think so. From waja to the latest model, Proton is well known for its heavier chassis and body which contribute to its magnificent handling. The third engine option is too outdated already and more expensive in terms of maintenance. It’s not going to appeal to the targeted market. So I think the best choice would be the second engine. Why? Because it can deliver the best power to weight ratio at minimal price. As quoted by Si-Fu, one of the regular visitor to PT blog: “The system above, provides good consumption at low speed, good low end and high end torque and most importantly power only when u need it.”
The Chassis:
The only choice proton would have is to start from the Waja Platform base. It was mention a long time ago that the Waja GX platform would spawn to many type of vehicles and one of it is an MPV. Based from the below data, The Chancellor platform is the best bet. This is also support the above statement regarding roomier cabin and storage space compared with the Wish.
Waja w/base: 2600 mm Dim: 4465 x 1740 x 1420 (L x W x H) mm
Chancellor w/base: 2850 mm Dim: 4715 x 1740 x 1420 mm
Wish w/base: 2750 mm Dim: 4560 x 1695 x 1590 mm
The Interior:
The news says that the interior are going to get the utmost attention especially on quality and praticality. Seems that dark color theme will be chosen as this is the prefered color by most Malaysian. The Dashboard, central console & steering wheel design will be something fresh and totally new. There will an extra aircond blower for rear passengers and the third row seats will be able to fold flat, just like the persona’s. There will be lots of cups holders as most MPVs and also not forgetting grocery hooks. As a whole, the interior quality will be on par with the best of the Japanese makes.
The Exterior:
For the exterior design, it is said that the Toyota Wish is it’s primary benchmark. The new Honda Stream and Mazda 5 are also included. So expect the body curves to be as stylish as this three models but slightly longer as to give better space for last row sits and luggage area. The front face might be taking some cue from the Lotus APX but overall, from afar, somebody could mistake it for the Toyota Wish.
This is not the actual would be model but just an artistic impression of the new proton mpv by Mr. Maru from Paultan forum

interesting….cannot wait lol…
very good n beautiful
Wow, I would like to buy it. Stylish and beau.
wow………..lawa 2!!!!!!!!!
I’m waiting for this baby. Have to postpone my grand livina booking…..
great info. But im still hoping that proton will use APX design instead of something ‘Wish’ like. APX has the personality of Proton…
nevertheless, i am hoping that a spy shot will come out before i decided to buy a grand livina. For proton, the better u let out the spyshot, the better for the company……
I miss new Saga already, bought a Viva just 1 month before SAGA was out.. I dont want to miss an APX…..
What took them so long to even decide to make MPVs? Bleargh. Like Thank God.
Grand Livina vs Proton MPV…..? Price, comfort, space….
mdin,
I’m no proton insider, but from Azlano (the chief designer himself) reviews of the Livina, you can expect it to be better in terms of comfort and space. Remember…. they benchmarked it against Toyota Wish! Price wise, it maybe hovering slightly lower that Livina for the basic spec to around 90K max.
wow! beautiful design..like toyota wish maa..
congratss … i cant wait to see it on road !!
Can’t wait to see what will proton came out with… But for sure I’ll stick to my beloved Toyota WISH!
Any newer updates from that little bird of yours?
Given the interior space requirements, benchmarking against the Wish and Stream doesn’t seem to be very realistic to me. The two has hopelessly poor 3rd row space and is unable to accomodate a rear blower. Not to be confused with the powertrain development mules pixs circulated around though.
i’m going to postpone my livina purchase also…. please dont disappoint so many “loyal” customer in malaysia
need to see the real car itself, if the head clearance is none existence not worth it your money. finishing is 2nd matter
jangan pula macam juara
dah laa minyak mahal rupo tak menarik
hope fully proton will back as a king of the road
we rakyak malaysia banga with our proton teams………..all the best
kawayi…..
elegant…..syle……establish, still waiting launching and purchase.
Proton MPV should come with E , G and V varians and 2.0 cc, if not its cannot challenge with others established MPV such as Toyota Avanza, Wish or Innova. Then Proton MPV should not worst than Honda Stream, Nissan Livina, Naza Ria or Naza Citra (Kia Sedona and Kia Caren) or even the box – looked Suzuki Arena.
I think of course the new comer cannot beat with luxurious Toyota Alpard, Toyota Estima, Honda Odyssey, Honda Elysion, Mazda 5, Nissan Serena, Nissan Elgrad, Renault Escape, Mitsubishi Grandis, Hyundai Trajet, Volvo Estate or Chevrolet Zefira and New Estate.
But I believe that Malaysia Boleh and sure they are not repeat their mistake of Proton Juara…
So how does it look likes…still mystery

Honda – Stream, Odyssey, Elysion
Mazda – Mazda 5
Nissan – Livina, Serena, Elgrad

Isuzu – Panter
South Korea
Hyundai – Trajet
Kia – Caren, Sedona
China
Cerry – Care
German

Renault – Scenic, Escape
Chevrolet – New Estate, Zefira

Anything more… let share and compare…
Can’t ait for this new baby – Hope that this time Proton wouldn’t make a mistake anymore just like they did with Juara coz we, the people of Malaysia always support you guys ( Proton’s )Keep it up!
what ever the new model proton mpv will look like..I must say here…congrats Proton!!!
I believe this is the beginning of new era for proton..
my hope is….dont forget to include NGV version for this model….
congratulation proton!
as a malaysian i’m fully supported our brand. always looking something on the positive perspectives and never underestimate our own fellow friends in proton because nothing is easy in creating something new. i think what ever the rumors came out lately, i know proton gave their 100% effort on this mpv and purely Inspired from Proton intelligence, ingenuity and experiences for an elegent and trendy first home-grown MPV.
as a malaysian we should support our own product and never underestimated our own innovatives..
good job proton…
sebenarnya masalah proton just pada diorng punya vendor, actually kalau semua vendor (pengeluar sparepart) mengeluarkan yang tulen and kualiti bagus maka tak laaa merosakkan nama proton.
aku dah ade 2 keta proton gen2 ‘04 and satria ‘00 pada aku problem proton just minor problem not major,so far gen2 aku ok just performance engine jea yang kureng coz 1.6 auto campro.Satria engine walaupun 1.3 tapi pick up memang power than gen2 laa…
aku harap satu jea, mpv yang akan keluar bagi laaa engine yang terbaik kalu campro 1.8 aku akan kecewa laa…
ape2 pun aku bangga pakai proton…sebab tu laaa aku ade 2 keta proton…
psssttt ade cadangan tak macam mane nak tambah pick up engine campro 1.6??? selain tukar engine, adjust exzos ????
Please give me some info
